The Sacred Heart School First year basketball team travelled to Portlaoise on Wednesday last to play in the Midlands Regional Final against Ursuline Convent, Thurles.
The girls showed great potential in the first quarter with Emily Bailey and Rachael Dunne scoring baskets with ease. The SHS girls had a comfortable lead at the end of the first quarter. A new five were introduced in the second quarter who were up against a more challenging five from Ursuline. The Thurles girls were not going down without a fight and reduced the lead in the second quarter.
With two quarters to go, the girls from Tullamore knew they had to increase their lead. Outstanding defence from Rebecca and Aoibheann O’Mahoney made it difficult for Ursuline to get to the basket.
The determination was evident from both teams in the last quarter. Baskets from Celia Hynes and Maisie Currams increased the Sacred Heart lead. The game ended up 49-32, a well deserved win for the Tullamore girls. The girls will now go ahead to compete in the All-Ireland playoffs.
Most of the girls began playing this year with good basic basketball skills through their involvement with Tullamore Basketball club and we acknowledge the hard work done by their coaches Richie O’ Mahoney and Rob Bailey.
