Offaly come close to badminton glory

Offaly finished runners up in the U-15 Leinster Badminton Intercounty Division 2 which was held recently and they very unlucky not to come away with the top honours.

Offaly qualified for Division 2 from Pool Group A, losing only to Wexford A.

Offaly met Kildare in their first Division 2 game. Mikey Ryan led off for Offaly in Boys Singles against Jack Kelly, KE. Mikey sneaked a 30/28 win. Emily White, OY, played a competitive match against Aoife Stafford, KE, but lost 21/30. Donal Grogan and Mikey Ryan kept Offaly on the winning way with a 30/13 win against Michael O’Houlihan, KE. Olive Kearney and Roisin Cockram followed this up with a 30/22 win in Girls Doubles against Rachel Downey and Caren Lee, KE. Olive Kearney and James Coughlan finished the match for Offaly with a 30/21 win over Jack Kelly and Aoife Stafford, KE.

Dublin won all five games against Kildare in their head to head, so were one point ahead of Offaly going into the final game in Division 2. Offaly had to win three games to draw level with Dublin and to win the division. Alas, the victory was not to be.

The bright spot in the match was Boys Doubles where Donal Grogan and Mikey Ryan scored a thrilling win 30/26, against Sam Herbert and David Dwyer. Donal Grogan lost to Paddy Martin 14/30 in Boys Singles. Roisin Cockram lost to Sara Boyle 11/30 in Girls Singles. Amy Dunican and Olive Kearney lost 14/30 to Ellen Kavanagh and Aela Flynn in Girls Doubles and Olive Kearney and James Coughlan lost the Mixed to Sara Boyle and Paddy Martin, 15/30.

Southwest Leinster Leagues

Grade 6 Ladies: Rathangan emerged winners in Grade 6 Ladies. Rathangan scored 3 wins, 2 in 3 sets, then won the first set in the last game to reach an unassailable 7 set to 2 set victory. Grade 6 Men: Rathangan won the first 3 games against Portarlington Parochial, all in 3 sets to win the Grade 6 Men’s title.

In Grade 1 Ladies Carlow LTC currently top the table with 14 points, followed by Portarlington Parochial A with 13. Crannagh are next with 7, followed by Johnswell with 4 and Portarlington Parochial B with 2. All scoresheets have been returned to the secretary for the first half of the schedule. The return match scoresheets have not arrived with the secretary at this time. With a few games remaining, the Grade 2 Men’s table looks like this: Carlow YM, 16; Portarlington Parochial, 10; Kilcullen 5 and Johnswell 5. Grade 4 Ladies is another league still to be finished. Mountmellick YM are topping the table with 8 points. Bough have 3 points and Carlow YM as 1. With two games remaining in Grade 5 Ladies, Portarlington Parochial top the table with 11 points. Abbeyleix CYMS and Athy RFC are level on 10 apiece; and Mullingar finishes with 9. Grade 5 Section A still has 2 games outstanding, and both involve Abbeyleix CYMS. Killoughey are precariously at the top with 15 points, followed by Athy RFC and Abbeyleix CYMS on 11, and Portarlington Parochial with 3. In Grade 5 Section B, Carlow YM tops the table at 9 points with their schedule complete. Bough still has to play Johnswell. Johnswell check in with 8 points and Bough has 3. The semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday 7 December, and the winners will meet in the final on 10 December. Meanwhile, play continues in the 8 person main leagues.
