The newly established Sparticus Boxing Club recorded some impressive results in their first competitive outings.
At the recent Offaly championships the club which currently has 11 members, took home 8 gold and 2 silver medals.
Head coach Dima Dmitruk said, “I am really proud of all our boxers, they have been working very hard in training and they are starting to get good results.
The club’s boxers that won county gold medals were Tiffany Hadley (Girls 1 – 44KG), Daria Bartuzel (Girls 1 – 56KG), William McDonagh (Boys 1 – 33KG), John Nevin (Boys 1 – 39KG), Gustas Giraitis (Boys 2 – 42KG and Senior Cadet), Sean Maher (Boys 4 – 91KG), and Stephen Myers (Junior Boys – 64KG). The boxers to take silver medals were Christopher Myers (Boys 1 – 36KG) and David Nevin (Youth 1 – 52KG).
Following the county championships, three boxers represented the club in the Leinster Youth finals. David Nevin put up a very brave fight but went out in the quarter final. However Sean Maher and Paddy Joyce both went on to win gold in their respective categories and qualified to fight in the national finals at the National Stadium on March 2.
The next outing for the young boys and girls (categories 1 to 4) will be their Leinster championships on March 11 in Newbridge. The club will be represented by Tiffney Hadley, Daria Bartuzel, William McDonagh, Christopher Myers, John Nevin and Gustas Giraitis. We wish them all the best of luck.
