COLÁISTE Cholim’s U-19 basketball team started off their 2011-2012 season on Thursday, October 13 against Gortnor Abbey from Crossmolina Co.Mayo in the first round of the cup.
There was a great sense of occasion and excitement throughout the school as this was the first game to be played in our new school gym and the first time that we ever hosted a game.
The opening quarter saw Coláiste Choilm take a 17- 6 lead with Sebastian Skura scoring 13 points. Good defensive play and rebounding by Mantas Pukelis , Declan Byrne and Ciaran Moloney ensured that the visitors were kept at bay. John Kavanagh worked extremely hard and his efforts were rewarded with two outstanding baskets late in the second quarter. Sean Aherne hit home an incredible 3 pointer just inside the half way line as the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter. The half time score Coláiste Choilm 31 Gortnor Abbey 14.
Gortnor Abbey came out fighting in the third quarter and closed the margin to 3 points. Coláiste Choilm regained their composure. Clever offensive play, clean passing of the ball by David O Keefe and strong defence saw the lads end the third quarter 42-30.
With a testing third quarter behind them the team took control of the last 10 minutes, scores from Skura, Byrne, Kavanagh and Pukelis stretched the margin to 27. Final score Coláiste Choilm 65 Gortnor Abbey 38.
October 13 will be remembered as the first game played in our new state of the art gym. Support from staff and students added greatly to the atmosphere. We look forward to our next game against Christian Brothers College Cork.
