As the Ladies Club of Tullamore Golf Club enters its Centenary Year the newly elected Captain Cáit Cooney (nee Gleeson), native of Ferbane, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of Captain.
Her parents, James and Mary Ann Gleeson, still reside in her native Ferbane and she now lives in Clonad, Tullamore, beside the Golf Club.
With a lifelong interest in sports she played badminton from a very early age. She met and married the late Garda Michael Cooney, Roscommon, who was then stationed in Ferbane. They moved to Abbeyleix after they married and lived their happily for 21 years before Michael was transferred to Tullamore and they moved here with their children in 1992.
A very keen sportswoman, Cáit played Badminton, Tennis and Golf in Abbeyleix. She was on the Midland Trophy winning team in 1985 and was Lady Captain of Abbeyleix Golf Club in 1986. She and Michael encouraged their three children Michelle, Olwen and Alan to play golf and it was no surprise when they all took to the game naturally.
When her late husband Michael was transferred to the Garda Station in Tullamore, the family joined Tullamore Golf Club in 1992.
She served on several committees and was former Secretary of the Ladies Club. She represented the Club on numerous successful teams including All Ireland Mixed Foursomes Final Silver Medal winners in 1999 and Gold Medal winners in 2000.
She won the Lady Captains prize in 2009, Boyne Trophy team winner in 2010 and most recently she was the outstanding golfer at the Ladies Club and won the Golfer of the Year in 2011 which she had previously won in 2009.
Cáit is very enthusiastic to attract new ladies to Tullamore Golf Club. While aware of these times of austerity, she says golf offers so much and is a game for every age. It helps to keep you fit in beautiful surroundings, provides a friendly environment to socialise and meet new people and it is a game you can play all your life.
Cáit is looking forward to celebrating the Centenary of the Ladies Club and she has great plans for the year ahead and she hopes this year the members of the Ladies Club can emulate some of the great players that have played for the Club over the Century.
