Winners were as follows with some great & close scores - 1st on 95 - Declan Fogarty 11, Ray Digan 15 & Ruadhri Clarke 18; 2nd on 94 - Frank Kelly 15, Padraig Hennessy 18 & Barry Scully 13; 3rd on 93 - Tom Whelan 22, Mick Dalton 13 & John Cantwell 21.

Next week’s competition is back to the traditional Foreball Betterball sponsored by Heatwise.

Tullamore’s Leinster Fourball team played Cill Dara on Sunday evening and due to some very close and extended matches (one still alive after 21 holes) play was cancelled due to darkness and will resume on Monday evening. Full result in next weeks notes.

Irish Mixed Foresomes is fixed for Friday, April 22 at 11.30am versus Birr.

THE annual Eden Décor Fourball was played last weekend. Many thanks to John and Orla Kilmurray proprietors of the ultra modern Eden Décor Centre for their generous sponsorship.An extra large number of members seized the opportunity of the Ideal weather conditions and supported this most popular competition and with the golf course in pristine condition scoring was excellent.

Camillus Donoghue (the winner of the PGA Tankard Singles competition last weekend) and Ronnie Farrell really scorched round the course and recorder an impressive score of 44 points off three quarters of their handicap captured first prize from the very consistent Terry Moore and Liam Farrelly who claimed second prize with 43 points with former captains prize winner Noel Duigenan and Larry Gavin from Rhode taking third prize with 42 points.

Result: 1st Camillus Donoghue and Ronnie Farrell 44pts, 2nd Terry Moore and Liam Farrelly 43pts, 3rd Noel Duigenan and Larry Gavin 42pts.

The Tuesday afternoon nine hole team event is now in full swing having started on Tuesday afternoon last and with a strong turnout of all the regular Tuesday evening crew the crack was mighty in the clubhouse. First prize went to the most loyal supporters of the Tuesday Afternoon competition Svend Jepsen, Tommy Glennon, Martin Groome and Ger Meehan. Well done lads, keep up the good golf and best of luck to Svend on his trip to the USA.

A new addition to the competition calendar this year is the Wednesday Open Singles competition for both ladies and gents having commenced last Wednesday. If the sizeable turnout of both ladies and gents on the first day is any indication to go by, this competition day could by the most popular of tournaments. The Ticknevin, Allenwood and Carbury area scooped all the prizes last week. Entry fee for this is members €5.Visitors €8.

Result: Men 1st Pat O’Neill 39pts, 2nd Alan Fanning 38pts, 3rd Michael Kelly 37pts. Ladies 1st Siobhan O’Callaghan 37pts.

A reminder to all beginner and junior members that Aiden Marsden rules officer with the Leinster Branch of the GUI will hold a rules seminar in Edenderry Golf Club on Thursday, April 14 at 8pm. In conjunction with this seminar Club Professional Ken O’Brien has agreed to give coaching lessons free of charge, preceding the seminar from 6.30pm to 8pm. All are welcome.

The Duggan Cup Inter Club competition, kindly sponsored by Edenderry Power, gets under way next weekend when Edenderry take on former winners Abbeyleix in the first round. Edenderry host this prestigious competition is fielding a very strong and formidable team this year in a determined attempt to will the Duggan Cup for the first time.

Duggan Cup Team: Tommy Hassett & Michael O’Brien, Brian Gaynor & Noel Usher, John Sheehan & Ken Collins, Sean Murray & Gerry Clarke, John Wyer & Kevin Farrell and Shay Mullianiff.

The qualifying round of the Challenge Cup will take place next weekend Saturday and Sunday, April 16 & 17. The top 32 players will then qualify for the match play stage. The outright winner of this competition will be the Club Match Play Champion for 2011. The match play draw will take place on Tuesday afternoon April 19.


SUNDAY and Thursday, April 3 & 7 were the two days in which the Edenderry golf club lady members played in the 18 hole stableford competition sponsored by Phil and Billy Connolly. They provided beautiful prizes for the winners which were presented by Lady Captain Trudy.

Result: 1st Gretta Foran 40pts, 2nd Miriam Malone 38pts, 3rd Catherine O’Donoghue 38pts, 4th Mary O’Neill 36pts, 5th Ann Gunning 35pts, 6th Margaret Murray 35pts. Front 9 S O’Donoghue, Back 9 Fidelma Mallen.

Lady Captain Trudy welcomed the big crowd of lady beginners who came out on the night and will hopefully join the club. They were given an introductory lesson by expert Ken O’Brien. The ladies enjoyed their lesson immensely and were treated to some refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards.

Wednesday and Thursday, March 9 & 10 saw the beginning of the ladies competitions. It was stableford and was greatly enjoyed by the players who took part. As usual the beautiful prizes were given by Frances Byrne who sponsors this competition year after year.

Lady Captain Trudy and Lady President Lucy were welcomed for the start of their year in office. Lady Captain Trudy then offered her sympathy and that of all the ladies present following the death of Brid Lynam’s beautiful daughter Marie – a minutes silence was observed. Lady Captain Trudy then presented the prizes to the following - 1st Eily Duigenan (7) 38pts, 2nd Maura Moore (20) 38pts, 3rd Julia Farrell (22) 36pts, 4th Miriam Gavin (22) 36pts, 5th Noranne Callagy (20) 36pts, 6th Gretta Foran (14) 35pts, 7th Nora Walsh (14) 35pts.

Lady Captain Trudy then thanked all who took part in the first of the ladies 18 hole competition and thanked Frances Byrne for her continuous sponsorship.


WITH summer rules in operation, the tees on the back sticks and the sun shining in the beautiful blue sky, Castle Barna hosted the first open fourball of their calendar year sponsored by Mr Terry Carroll. The course was in great condition and proved to be a great test.

Most people who play any golf course normally try to keep everything going as straight as they can on the course, but the legend they call the Brian ‘Rooster’ McCormack thought he had his jeep with him when he tried to take on the 8th bunker with his power ‘jeep’ caddie not proving to be very successful and ending up in the middle of the bunker. Keep it on the fairways Brian!

Winners on the day from Portarlington Golf Club with a great score were 1st Overall Paul Dunne & Eddie O’Loughlin 43pts back 9, 2nd Lee O’Meara & Joe Joslin 43pts, 3rd Martin Gallagher & Niall Smyth 43pts.

The very popular Thursday Open was won by Ger Peyton (18) with 41pts clinching it on a countback, 2nd Declan Rogers (7) 41pts b9, 3rd Derek ‘Sergio’ Hannon (2) 39pts.

Seniors 3 Ball Classic: Two to score on each hole except one to score on par 3’s - 1st John Lowbridge, Larry Staunton and Murty Quinn with 80 pts, 2nd Ber Malone, Paddy England and Tom Dunne 74pts, 3rd Joe Heuston, Bill Perrin and Mick Redmond 71pts. Nearest the pin - Alan Graham. Prizes presented by Tom Dunne.

The mid-week nine hole competition no 15 was won by a club stalwart in Martin Furlong with 20 pts.

Evening 9 Hole Stroke on Thursday, April 7 - 1st Ger Colgan (15) 30.5, 2nd Seanie Geoghegan (13) 31.5, 3rd Martin Furlong (17) 32.5, 4th Liam Lynch (20) 33, 5th Adrian Stewart (19) 33.5.

The draw for the foursomes mathplay is on view on the clubhouse notice board with some very interesting matches to take place in the near future. The Seniors Open continues every Tuesday while the Open Single Stableford is on each Thursday. Visitors are always welcome.

THE sun was shining on Wednesday evening for the popular 9 hole competition. There was a great turn out from the ladies. Patricia Mahon sponsored the prize won by Teresa Bermingham with Betty Duffy second. The competition is held every Wednesday evening at 5.30pm.

Rules night will be held in the clubhouse on Wednesday evening April 20 at 7.45. All members welcome.

On Saturday, April 9 Castle Barna ladies travelled to Dunmurray Springs for their first away outing of the year and a very enjoyable day was had by all. The 3 ball scramble was won by Joan Nolan, Phil Walsh and Nell Scally. Second were Kate Elliot, Catherine McGrath and Angela Murphy. Nearest the pin was Patricia Mahon and the longest drive was shared by Jane Kennedy and Eilish O’Connell.

THIS week’s competition was kindly sponsored by Castle Paints. There was a large turnout and the glorious weather helped to produce some excellent scores. The overall winner was Patrick Egan who returned a fine score of 42pts. Martin Devine won Category 1 with 40pts while Ian McDermott took top spot in Category 2 with 39pts.

Ross Scanlon narrowly missed out on the overall but took the honours in Category 3 with 42pts. Pat Egan took the front 9 with 24pts with John McEvoy taking the back 9 with 22pts.

Birr Community School Classic: The very popular annual classic organised by the parent’s council takes place on Friday, April 29. There is a timesheet in operation. Bríd Grogan is in charge of same and she can be contacted at 086 1073639.

The mini Club Class will take place on Sunday and Monday, April 24 & 25. Please support the first of our golf fund-raising events. Timesheet and entry Sheet is now available in the club house for attention.

As promised we hope to keep you up to date on upcoming fixtures in the AA Club Matches. The Intermediate Cup team played Moate in Tullamore last Saturday and suffered a narrow defeat with all matches played in a fine sporting manner. Thanks to Tullamore for facilitating the match and to Emer Hanniffy for managing the team.

Next out is the Junior Cup Team on Monday, April 18 against Mullingar in Moate – Team Captain Anne Frawley.

The Irish Mixed Foursomes versus Tullamore is also fixed for Friday, April 22 with 2 pairs at home and 3 pairs away – Team Captains are Michael Horan and Vera Smyth.

We wish all our panels and team captains much success with the various teams and we all look forward to bringing some silver to the Glenns in 2011.

KINNITTY Golfing Society will be holding their first outing of the year in Roscrea golf club on Saturday, April 23. Tee is from 12 noon. The captain Christy Purcell is expecting a good turnout for this event which is kindly sponsored by Frank Murray. New members are welcome. If interested please contact Christy or any of the golfing committee.


THE final of the Business House League will be held this Thursday, April 14 at 6pm sharp at the course in Arden. Best of luck to both teams.

The Monday night foursomes make a welcome return next Monday , April 18 at 6.30pm.

The names for the Club Matchplay are on the notice board. The draw will take place on Monday evening after the foursomes.

The progressive 25’s continue each Tuesday night at 9pm. Results for last week were 1st Joe Malone and Bridie O’Grady and 2ndRichie Molloy and Sean McCarthy.

Old time dancing continues on Thursday nights at 8pm in the clubhouse. New dancers are heartily welcome.
