Tullamore had home advantage for their 1st league game of the 2011/2012 season. With 6 weeks pre-season training behind them Tullamore were confident going into this game despite missing key players Ruth Brophy and Deirdre Rigney through injury and other 1st team regulars Kirby Cox, Patricia Friend Periera and Sonia Matthews.
Tullamore’s eagerness shone through in the opening minutes with a powerful shot on goal from centre forward Niamh Redmond. Tullamore continued to work hard with Grace Brennan and Emma Delahunt leading the defence. The next goal chance of the game also fell to Tullamores Niamh Redmond after an impressive pass from central midfielder Sabrina Carroll, but the Monkstown defence could not be broken.
Tullamore’s best chance of the game came after a well earned short corner and it was Emma Delahunt who narrowly shot wide. After this the travelling side began to settle into the game and they were awarded a succession of short corners. Tullamore defence stood strong again with clearances from Yvonne Murray, Monica Cleary and Grace Brennan. Goalkeeper Clodagh Armitage also pulled off some fantastic saves. Minutes from the end of the half Monkstown took the lead when their centre forward took a deflection into the goal. Tullamore were unlucky to be behind at the break.
After some encouraging words from coach Peter Kings at half time, Tullamore continued to pile on the pressure looking for that well deserved equaliser. The midfield line of Aideen Mahon, Sabrina Carroll and debutant Ailish Redmond started to take back control. Forwards Ciara Geogeghan and Kate O’ Brien started to settle into the game and Tullamore were very unlucky not to get an equaliser in the opening 10 minutes of the half. From here Monkstown started to stamp their authority on the game and went two up 15 minutes from the end. However Tullamore did not give up and took their 1st goal of the season when Sabrina Carroll collected an Ailish Redmond pass 30 metres from goal, soloed and sent a rasping shot to the corner of the net . Tullamore continued to battle and their next chance came when Monica Cleary earned a well deserved free, Monica shot into the circle but the ball was deflected wide.
Although Tullamore did not pick up any points they will be pleased with their performance. Thanks to coaches Peter Kings and Ann Corcoran. Tullamore’s 1st team are away next week to Pembroke Wanders and Tullamore’s 2nds are also away to Newbridge. Both teams are wished the best of luck.
Tullamore 1sts: Clodagh Armitate, Yvonne Murray, Grace Brennan, Emma Delahunt, Monica Cleary, Aideen Mahon, Sabrina Carroll, Ailish Redmond, Ciara Geogeghan, Niamh Redmond, Kate O’Brien, Coleen Connolly.
