After becoming the first 64th seed to ever make it through to the third round of the Accenture World Matchplay Championship, Offaly’s Shane Lowry bowed out on Saturday to the red hot Graeme McDowell.
The Northern Ireland player was in a rich vein of form and he four up at the turn after sinking a series of long putts.
Lowry had opened an early lead after winning the second hole but McDowell hit back quickly to ease into the lead.
Lowry managed to keep with McDowell on the back nine and pulled back one hole but in the end holes ran out for the Clara man as McDowell won 3&2.
Lowry had defeated Rory McIlroy in the first round seeing off Carl Pettersson to reach the round of 16.
While he will be disappointed not to have progressed further in the event, his victory over World Number 1 McIlroy has certainly brought him to the attention of the golfing fraternity in America.
He will now try and qualify for the Honda Classic.
