Grennan sets early pace in Tullamore harriers Spring League

ON Thursday, March 1 the annual Spring League got underway. This consists of a series of three races, of different distances, held on three different training dates.

Club members are divided into four teams ensuring a friendly but spirited battle for victory. The captains for the teams this year are; Leonard Owens, Rita Daly, Michelle Mullaney and Ray Martin.

The 1st event was the 5k race, where 70 athletes lined up on a pleasant calm evening. Catch Grennan was a clear winner in a time of

16.15 with the ever improving Dave Fox hot on his heels (16.46), and Jody O’Reilly (17.23) in third position. 1st lady on the night was Mary Bracken in a time of 19.28, followed by Michelle Mullaney (19.34) and Nicole Cuskelly (19.37) in third.

Many impressive running times were posted and indeed personal bests were rewarded to quite a few.

League Round 2

On Thursday, March 8 the 3k event was held on the tarmac track. Due to the large numbers – 66 athletes, two separate 3000m races were held.

Again the weather was favourable for good race times and two highly competitive races made for exciting finishes.

Here again Catch Grennan had the fastest time (9.24), with Dave Fox in 2nd position (9.43). In 3rd place was a most impressive run by Jason Donegan (9.50) showing his dedication to training is paying off.

Indeed the performances by the other juveniles who competed - Harry Flynn, Kevin Bracken, Sean Donegan, Nicole Cuskelly, Glen Cunningham and Sinead Rigney must be commended.

1st lady on the night was Pauline Curley (10.02), Nicole Cuskelly in 2nd place (11.07) and Michelle Mullaney 3rd (11.12).

Tullamore Harriers annual general meeting was held on Monday, March 6 in The Court Hotel. Congratulations to John Cronin who was re-elected as Club Chairman and for new and returning officers.

Bohermeen Half Marathon

Pauline Curley was a clear winner in the Bohermeen Half Marathon on March 4. She was 1st lady and 20th overall in a time of 1.18.58.

On Saturday, March 3 a 4mile cross country race was held on grounds of Maynooth College. Declan Fahey was 10th overall in a time of 22.21.

John Todd was 63rd and 1st 0/60 in a time of 25.47.

On Saturday, March 10 the venue was ALSAA, and John Todd again won his age group in the 5mile race in a time of 32.49 Maire-Triona Keane, who has recently resumed racing after a long break due to injury, was 2nd lady in the 2 mile race in a time of 13.08.

Brady 10th in Universities CC

The Irish Universities Cross Country Championships were held over a very tough hilly course in Waterford on Saturday last and a big field of 118 athletes completed the course. Liam Brady (Dublin Institute of Technology) started conservatively and picked off athletes throughout the race to finish very a very creditable 10th place behind the winner, John Coghlan (DCU).

He completed the tough 5 mile course in 29:35 minutes, just 35 second behind the bronze medallist Michael Mulhare (UL). Brady finished 100m ahead of the recently crowned National Intermediate Cross Country champion, Jayme Rossiter.

Bundoran 10 mile Challenge

TWO Tullamore Harriers members Mike Murphy and Ronan Duffy wore the blue and white in far away Bundoran on Saturday, March 10. Mike was 11th finisher in a time of 58.50 and Ronan was 49th place in a time of 1.03.50.
