OFFALY hurlers held President Johnny Flaherty’s Prize last Friday in Tullamore Golf Club. The competition is an inter GAA club team event played for the Matt Spain Cup. Matt was the founding president of the society.
The Tullamore course was in superb condition with greens running true and fast.
The format of the competition was a little unusual with 3 scores to count at each hole from a team of 4 thus putting more emphasis on team play.
Coolderry, following in the steps of their hurling team, retained the Matt Spain cup with a score of 115pts and were represented by Noel Lyons, Des Dooley, Brain Doyle and Flan Lyons.
In second place with 111 pts were Kinnitty Seniors represented by Ger Coughlan, Dessie Kavanagh, Jerome Molloy and Johnny Flaherty. The Kinnitty Junior team of Pat Spain, Patsy McGuinness, Colm Spain and Connor Roche finished in 3rd place with 110pts.
President Johnny Flaherty presented the Matt Spain Cup to captain of the winning team, Flan Lyons and he congratulated all the prize winners and Tullamore for having the course in such fantastic condition.
Tullamore Golf Club Captain, Oliver Geraghty, welcomed all to Tullamore and congratulated the winners. He also thanked Johnny Flaherty and J & M Jewellers whom are regular sponsor in club competitions.
Offaly Hurlers are having their next outing in Birr on Friday 31st August and this will be Captain Noel Lyon’s Prize. Anyone interested in playing or joining the society should contact the secretary Ray Spain at 087 9856208 or email@example.com
