At the weekend the Short Course National Senior Championship Swimming Competition took place in Lisburn and Durrow’s Alex Condron
The Killina Secondary School student took second place in the 200 breast stroke.
Despite being still only 16, Alex only missed out on the Senior title by 0.3 of a second in a time of 2.20.08.
He automatically qualified for the British Age Group championship in July in Sheffield.
On Saturday Alex was again in action in the 100 Breast Stroke and swam fine time of 1.06.60 to finish third. The race was won by Barry Murphy who is representing Ireland in the London Olympics.
This has to be a first for Offaly in Swimming in a National Senior Event, and considering his age, Alex is being tipped as a serious prospect for the future.
In other events Alex made the B final in the 200 free style in a time of 1.58.00 and in the 400 free style he did a time of 4.15 and made it to the A final.
His brother Ryan was also in action. He swam two Personal Bests, one in the 100 free style in a time of 57 seconds and in the mile he did a time of 17.40.
