News from the fairways

LAST weekend’s competition was an aggregate fourball and unfortunately due to frost and a full time sheet on Sunday morning it was decided to play winter green’s rather than wait for frost to clear.

As full greens were open on Saturday, competition’s committee decided to have two separate competitions and as the score’s suggested, this was a correct decision.

Saturday’s winners in very wintry conditions and obviously getting their parings correct just before entry with a great score for the day were Declan Cooney & Ger Doyle on 77, closely followed by Ray Coughlan & Willie Egan on 75.

Sunday’s scores on the shorter winter greens were extremely high, the winner’s with 89, Tom Sheeran & Brian Deering, followed closely on 88 by two pairs, Ray Dignan & Matt Flannelly just ousting the two Carthage’s Grogan & Flannagan on the back nine.

Liam Mooney recorded an ace on the 8th. - not sure he can really claim it as an eagle.

St Patrick’s Day competition will be a three person team any competition, sponsored by ‘J & M Jewellers’ .All scores on par 3s and 2 to score on all other holes as was very popular in the recent captains drive in competition.

Next week-end’s competition is the Holmpatrick Cup (re-entry allowed with different partner) sponsored by Walsh & Walsh Financial Consultants.

THOSE members not competing in the final of the Winter League ventured out on the Esker Hill’s on Sunday last to contest the first 18 hole competition of 2011. Conditions were cool but dry and the scoring was excellent. Andrew Bourke took the role of Hon Treasurer of the club this year and when he totted up his card at the end of his round he found himself with the winning score of 39 points. Gary Scanlon took the spoils in category one with a fine score of 38 points and Catch Malloy’s efforts secured him top spot in category three with an excellent 37 points.

Patrick Egan was back in the winning circle again this week when his 37 points topped all in category three. The Front Nine was very tight and after an examination of cards it went to Alan Lowry with 21 points, winning on the back three. Andrew Bourke’s took the back nine with 21 points which added up to a fine start to the season for the Hon Treasurer.

Winter League Final: Our friends in Tullamore Hardware again kindly sponsored the 2011 Winter League and our thanks are extended to Jimmy, Johnny and all in Tullamore Hardware for their continued support.

Captain Sean Doolan tossed a coin to see who would have the choice of play on the tee and when Loretta Flynn won the toss she opted to go first. Loretto was out in the first match against Anna Kavanagh. Anna played some excellent golf to halt proceedings on the 14th to comfortably win the first match.

Three birdies on 14, 15 and 16 gave Luke Mannerings a second point for his team against Barry Gillespie with the focus then switching to the match between Michael McEvoy and Robert Dunne. Robert was giving Michael ten shots and putting up an excellent fight but Michael held his nerve and took the all-important third point for his team. Brendan Kennedy looked like taking a fourth point for the winning team in his match against Martin Devine and Nigel Dunne seemed destined to take a consolation point for the runners up when Club Captain Sean Doolan called the final two matches in.

The teams retired to the club house to enjoy some well deserved refreshments and to take stock of the days events. Presentations and speeches took place afterwards with the Club Captains Sean Doolan and Vivienne Dunican united in their praise for a well run competitive event and complimented the teams on the sporting manner in which the played their matches. Thanks were also extended to the Club Competitions Secretary Paul Stewart who looked after the running of the competition and who contended with the largest entry list in the clubs history.
