Paul Loonam
A TALENTED Pullough boxer won a bronze medal at the European U-22 Boxing Championships in Croatia at the weekend.
A member of St Carthage's Boxing Club in Rahan, Paul Loonam took bronze when he had a great win over Italy's Simone Spada in the 60kg lightweight class. Loonam dominated the fight to win with a 5-0 decision.
He had qualified for the quarter-finals with an unanimous decision aganst Hungary's Ruben Romai but his ambitons of a silver medal came up short when he was beaten by Maksym Vlasiuk of Ukraine. Loonam boxed his heart out and was very close in a split 3-2 loss.
It was a successful championships for Irish boxers with a number of their nineteen strong team getting among the medals.
