Derryarkin Sand and Gravel has been granted planning permission for an 87.6-hectare extension to their existing sand and gravel pit at their site at Derrygreenagh, Rhode.

The extension will be to the south-west, south and south-east of its existing pit and lies within an application site of 146.1 hectares.

The project allows for the stockpiling, drying, on-site screening, loading and off-site transport of excavated sand and gravel from the extension area.

It will see the upgrading of the access road to the existing pit from its junction with the R400 regional road up to the new wheelwash facility to be installed to the east of the existing weighbridge.

The application also sought provision for an 18.2 sq. metre mobile site office, a 9.5 sq. metre mobile staff welfare unit, a refuelling pavement slab.

It also includes the proposed restoration of the proposed extension lands to naturally regenerated wildlife habitat, water ponds and potential long-term amenity.

An environmental impact assessment report was prepared as part of the plans.
