BREAKING: Man posing as Garda robs elderly man in Offaly

The Gardaí have begun an investigation after a man posed as a Garda and stole a sum of money from an elderly male resident in Co. Offaly, Midlands 103 have reported.

The incident took place when the man, who claimed he was a Garda detective, approached the elderly Ferbane native outside his home in Derrica Beg, Ballylin, Ferbane at 11:15 on Thursday morning. The imposter produced identification suggesting he was a Garda investigating the use of counterfeit money.

When had he gained entry to the house, the resident produced cash which the thief proceeded to steal and is said to have fled in a black saloon car in the direction of Athlone.

Gardaí have said the suspect was clean shaven, around 50 years of age and of large build. They are looking for information on the suspect who was said to be wearing a cap, a shirt and tie and navy jacket, befitting the description of a man impersonating a member of An Garda Síochana.

The Gardaí at Ferbane Garda Station are appealing for witnesses or anyone who noticed the man or any suspicious behaviour around the area at the time of the crime, reported to be Thursday morning. People with information are encouraged to contact Ferbane Garda Station on 09064 54302.
