Pope Francis will visit Ireland in 2018. The Pontiff accepted and invitation extended by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny following a meeting between the two men in the Vatican this morning.

Pope Francis had already been invited to Ireland in August 2018 for the World Meeting of Families by the country's Catholic Bishops.

The last time a Pope visited Ireland was in 1979 and on that occasion, 20,000 people gathered to see Pope John Paul II in Clonmacnoise in Offaly. He was also given a tour of the ancient monastic site.
