The Green Party said today that the latest global temperature figures released by the UN highlight the urgency needed in the fight to limit the worst effects of climate change.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Average temperatures so far in 2016 put the current level at 1.2 degrees above the base mark.
Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan TD, speaking in response to the report, said today: “These figures are a reminder of the scale of the challenge we face. The election of Donald Trump is only going to make matters worse. He does not even believe in climate science and he wants to keep the US economy on a fossil fuel path. It will be up to us in Europe and the other signatories to the Paris treaty to hold the line.
He also stated that advancing the green industrial revolution will have to be good for our economy as well as our environment. As the evidence of climate change takes hold we will have to turn away from buying goods that come with a polluted 'Made in the USA' brand. We have everything to gain from changing our food, energy, transport and economic systems to a cleaner and more efficient economic model.
“Looking after the planet must go hand in hand with looking after our local economy. It is time we sent the American, Russian and Saudi oil companies packing. We can put manners on Trump and Putin by giving up on their gas and oil products. It is time to leave those old fossils in the swamp.”Eamon Ryan concluded.
