Sinn Féin TD for Offaly and North Tipperary, Teachta Carol Nolan, has called on the HSE to immediately fill the vacant psychologist post for the Offaly early intervention team.

Teachta Nolan was commenting after a Parliamentary Question response to the Deputy from the HSE stated that the post is currently vacant and that approval has been granted to proceed with the filling of the post.

Teachta Nolan said: “I welcome the fact that approval has been granted for the filling of this post and that the required paperwork has been completed to proceed with the recruitment process. I am calling on the HSE to immediately proceed with the recruitment for the post and to take all possible action to ensure that this post is filled as soon as possible.

Deputy Nolan says she has raised the issue of the ongoing lack of services for children with disabilities in the Laois and Offaly areas in the Dáil on a number of occasions.

“In recent months, it was highlighted by the local group Laois and Offaly Families for Autism that the services for children in this region are amongst the worst in the state. I have asked the Minister of State with responsibility for Disability Services to meet with me on this issue to discuss in depth the experiences of parents of children with disabilities in this region.

“I hope that the Minister will consider this request favourably and I would like to assure parents that I will continue to highlight these issues on behalf of children with disabilities, Deputy Nolan concluded.
