The Digital Schools of Distinction is a flagship programme which promotes, recognises and encourages excellence in the use of technology in primary schools. In order to successfully secure this nationally recognised award – which is accredited by the Department of Education – Scoil Mhuire had to successfully complete a three step programme, the final step being a lengthy inspection into all areas of ICT in the school.

This inspection honed in on Leadership and Vision, ICT in the Curriculum, School ICT Culture, Professional Development, Resources and Infrastructure. Scoil Mhuire scored very high in each of these areas.

The inspector noted that under the leadership and vision of Scoil Mhuire’s management team, which includes a designated ICT co-ordinator, the school aims to equip the pupils with the necessary skills so that they are prepared to live and work in an ever changing world. As the school is currently in the stages of a metamorphous with a new building on the horizon, there isn’t a better time to be acknowledged for all the work that is currently taking place in a school that opened its doors all the way back in 1957.

The school is fortunate to have interactive whiteboards as well as a number of iPads which are used to enhance the learning of phonics and maths. There is also a dedicated computer room in Scoil Mhuire, where children discover how to programme from 1st class. A Computer Club is also run in the school where children learn how to type, create presentations as well as learning how to be safe on line.

Scoil Mhuire’s use of technology is utilised fully due to the dedication and interest in technology among the staff. Children are digital natives and this is the world in which they live. Many of us adults are digital immigrants who are still catching on to the everyday changes we are faced with in technology. Scoil Mhuire has recognised this, and the school is determined to prepare its pupils for life as millennial children. Securing this outstanding award, is a testament to all the time and effort that is put in on a daily basis to provide the best possible education for its pupils.
