THERE is a new manager at the helm of St Mary's Youth and Community Centre in Tullamore. Stephen Lawlor, recently took over the reins and he has major plans for its future.

Stephen said he always wanted to work in the youth centre, either as a Youth Development Officer or as Manager. Prior to this he worked with the Muiriosa Foundation and followed that as a Special Needs Assistant.

Local councillors and other guests were invited to the relaunch of the facility last Friday afternoon, March 31.

In his speech, Stephen described St Mary's Youth Centre as ''a vital hub in our community for many years.''

He thanked all those who contribute to its success and all those who he said, ''worked tirelessly to make this centre what it is today, from the volunteers who have given countless hours of your time, to the local government officials who sponsor us along the way, especially Cllr Declan Harvey who currently serves on our board of management,'' he said.

Stephen commented that since he became manager he has been inundated with support from the staff and volunteers.

''It's your attitude, kindness, and the will to make this centre a success that makes the centre such an enjoyable and comfortable place for all our members.

''As we celebrate the relaunch we are also celebrating the values that this centre represents, This is a place for young people to come to find support, meet new friends, learn new skills, and engage with the wider community. It is a place for people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures to come together to create something special,'' said Stephen.

He continued, ''the relaunch of this centre is about more than a new coat of paint or some upgraded facilities. It is about renewal and commitment to the values that have always been at the heart of this centre. It is about providing a welcoming space where young people can thrive and where the community can come together to create something truly remarkable,'' he added.

The event coincided with the launch of the centre's new website, a task which was performed by Sister Jenny, and with her finger on the key the site went live.

In his address, Chair Denis Magnier recalled when the youth centre was in Scoil Mhuire.

''I can remember going to the first show they put on, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,'' he said.

''We are very lucky as well to come down and be given this building by the nuns, it was a very kind gesture and we are very fortunate to have the building.''

Congratulating Stephen, he said ''I am convinced we made a very good decision when we appointed him as manager of the centre. He has made a very good start and I wish him the best of luck in the future.''

Denis Magnier said it was great to see three generations of the Lawlor family represented, ''it feels like a takeover,'' he remarked.

He thanked all the councillors present, adding that it was great to see them supporting an initiative like this. He especially welcomed Sister Jenny and Sister Ann, two of the founding members.

''50 years later they are still involved here. A great achievement, it's fantastic to see Jenny launching this here today,'' he said.

Entertainment and refreshments were provided afterwards.
