Offaly TD praises organisers of 'mammoth' National Ploughing Championships
Offaly TD Carol Nolan has today commended the organisers of the Ploughing Championships in the preparations for their 87th event which got underway in Screggan today.
Speaking from the constituency Deputy Nolan described the preparatory works for the event as “a mammoth operation due entirely to the fantastic partnership established between the organising committee, civil service providers, local residents, landowners and volunteers.”
Deputy Nolan went on to state that, "the value of the Championships to the local economy in Offaly is vitally important. The distinctiveness of the event has seen its appeal grow beyond that of traditional agricultural visitors and it now offers a unique visitor experience to city dwellers and tourists alike."
"I understand that this year, the first-day attendances are expected to exceed last year’s record of 100,000 visitors. This presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Hidden Heartlands as a tourist and visitor destination," she said.
Deputy Nolan also commented on the number of local exhibitors at this year’s event. “I was delighted to count almost one hundred Offaly exhibitors representing all sectors, and countless more from the neighbouring Midlands counties. I am confident these exhibiters will connect with customers and audiences beyond their normal reach. I wish all of them every success in promoting their products and the region."
Deputy Nolan concluded by extending her gratitude to the local public service providers. “As a public representative I want to particularly acknowledge the role of An Garda Síochána; Offaly County Council and the Emergency Services without whom, the logistics of this large-scale event would not be possible. They and the organisers can be assured of my continued support for this fantastic event.”
