The main route through Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles was singled out as particularly bad

The N62 national road, from the border of Offaly and North Tipperary in Roscrea to Thurles, has been singled out as posing grave risks to safety for motorists by an elected representative.

Roscrea based Independent Councillor, Shane Lee, told the monthly meeting for the Municipal Council for the Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles area that the national route has been repeatedly highlighted and he cannot understand “why there is a breakdown in communication” with the national roads authority, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Cllr Lee said there will be a serious accident where the road crosses the county border if remedial works are not carried out and said sections have become raveled with potholes and the surface on several stretches have deteriorated.

He said constituents from his area are “constantly calling” about the issue, which he has repeatedly highlighted at municipal meetings.

Previously he raised concerns over pedestrian safety on the N62 near Roscrea, requesting a speed survey and road safety assessment of the route.

He said the road is “as big as a motorway” and raised concerns about pedestrian safety, saying there is “no safe crossing” for people living and working along the route, including those accessing local businesses, and warned that pedestrians are currently forced to cross a busy national road, adding it is “time now that we put our shoulder to the wheel.”
