Offaly County Council has advised that "significant snowfall was recorded in Offaly overnight and as of now Offaly is at Status Orange."
They did say, however, that all roads in the county remain open apart from the Kinnitty to Mountrath road, the R440
Regional Road and the L8001-1 across the Slieve Blooms, which was closed yesterday.
"All treated routes are operational albeit with caution due to lying snow. Roads were treated at 5pm yesterday with a second treatment/ploughing since 3am. Further treatment and a ploughing run commenced at 8:30am this morning on all major routes," the council told us.
Roads users are advised to exercise extreme caution and not to travel unless absolutely necessary. Advice is offered from www.rsa.ie.
Elsewhere, the District Court in Tullamore is cancelled today. 14 people arrested and charged as part of a Garda drugs sting in Offaly were due to appear this morning.
The Council also said that sufficient stocks of salt are in place to grit roads as per Offaly County Council’s Winter Maintenance
"We would ask the public to check www.winterready.ie for advice on how to deal with potential adverse weather conditions. Please check on the elderly and isolated neighbours and friends and ensure they have adequate stocks of food, fuel and medicine."
