The N80 through Mountmellick town from Portlaoise to Tullamore has been completely closed ahead of rush-hour traffic.
Laois County Council Roads Department has confirmed that the N80 coming into and leaving the Mountmellick from Portlaosie and Tullamore sides is closed and diversions are being put in place. Most other roads around Mountmellick are also impassable.
The best way to avoid Mountmellick is to go via Portarlington.
Traffic has been moving very slowly with up to 40 minute delays getting through the town since Midday.
A total of 20 families have been evacuated from their flooded homes in Mountmellick. The Owenass Rover which runs through the town burst its banks early on Wednesday, November 22.
Local creches and businesses are flooded with water and the two national schools in the town closed early today for health and safety reasons.
