MIDOC closed its doors in 2018, numerous TDs and councillors have decried the decision as a disgrace, yet actionable results have remained elusive. Local Election Candidate Aubrey Claffey is demanding an immediate reassessment of the closure of the Midoc service in Birr, shedding light on the critical data disclosed during parliamentary questions posed by party leader Peadar Tóibín.

According to Tóibín's response to a parliamentary question, an average of 20 individuals accessed the service over a weekend in 2018, highlighting the urgent need for a new assessment to accurately gauge the healthcare needs of the community now.

"It's unbelievable that no one has called for a new assessment to be carried out, especially in light of these critical figures," asserts Aubrey Claffey. "The neglect of such vital data is a disservice to the residents of Birr and underscores the urgent need for action." Mr Claffey is leading the charge for a comprehensive review to assess the current healthcare landscape in 2024.

"We cannot ignore the reality facing our community," asserts Mr Claffey. "People are struggling to access basic healthcare services, and the burden is falling on facilities like Midoc Tullamore to pick up the slack. This is unacceptable."

A new review must be conducted to accurately gauge the demand for services like Midoc in 2024 and apply pressure on the HSE to allocate resources accordingly. The community dynamics have undergone significant transformations since 2018 stated Mr Claffey. With ongoing healthcare crisis it’s evident that relying on the same strategy is impractical. It’s imperative to reassess the current figures, especially six years down the line.

The shutdown of Midoc in 2018 left numerous residents without adequate medical care, leading to challenges in accessing essential services. Tullamore now shoulders the responsibility of catering to both the local population and overflow due to GP appointment shortages. It's crucial to gain detailed insights into where people are travelling from and accessing services in Tullamore. Understanding the deficiencies in the Birr's Municipal District is vital to advocating for improved services for constituents within the community.

"People should not have to endure barriers to accessing essential healthcare," emphasises Mr Claffey. "It's time for the HSE to step up and deliver the services our community deserves.”

In response to Peadar Tóibín’s Parliamentary Question, Aontú will be seeking to clarify the number of individuals accessing the Midoc service in Tullamore and ascertain how many of these individuals are travelling from the Birr Local Electoral Area. By shining a light on these critical issues, they aim to apply pressure on the HSE to prioritise the well-being of the community and deliver equitable access to healthcare services.

As the campaign for healthcare justice gains momentum, Aubrey Claffey and supporters of the Aontú party remain steadfast in their commitment to holding authorities accountable and fighting for equitable access to healthcare for all residents of Offaly.
