New Shannonbridge jetty is nearing completion

Locals welcome extensive facility for boating traffic

THE construction by Waterways Ireland of a new floating jetty in Shannonbridge is nearly complete.
Locals are very happy with this construction project, which consists of 108 metres of floating jetty along with an access ramp and a freeboard for canoe access.
The jetty has been anchored by steel piles and has been anchored to a 2.5m square concrete plinth.
In December 2024 Offaly County Council granted planning permission to Waterways Ireland for the jetty on the eastern bank of the Shannon river in the village .
The jetty will provide safe mooring facilities for cruising craft, smaller boats and canoe access in Shannonbridge. When it submitted its planning application Waterways Ireland submitted a Natura Impact Statement and an Ecological Impact Assessment. During the planning process the Council pointed out that there is “a legacy issue” in Shannonbridge in relation to domestic waste from boats and campervans arriving at the marina area, and noted that there had been reports by Birr Municipal District on several occasions that bags of domestic waste had been dumped next to the marina and in public bins along Main Street. Waterways Ireland said it encourages users to follow the 'leave no trace policy' and there is signage for the disposal of rubbish at the site.
Meanwhile a separate floating walkway is also being planned for the Callows in Shannonbridge. A public amenity area on a vacant site on the Main Street is also being proposed. Daniel Woodroffe Group Ltd are undertaking the walkway project.
