The Onam Festival was marked by celebrations by Roscrea's Indian community at the weekend.

Among those who attended the celebrations were Tipperary Fianna Fáil TD, Ryan O'Meara , who performed the lighting of the vilakku lamp to get proceedings underway, as well as community Garda Kay Gaynor and members of staff from the Dean Maxwell and Mount Carmel nursing homes.

The traditional harvest and cultural festival, which has its roots in Kerala, India, took place on Saturday September 6 in the Muintir na Tíre Community Hall in Roscrea.

Families gathered from around the local area to enjoy a vibrant floral display, as well as lamp lighting, singing and dance, before sitting down to a Sadya, a grand vegetarian feast.
