An artist impression of transformed Castle Street in Roscrea
Roscrea's town centre is set to receive some exciting and ambitious developments next year with a focus on Castle Street and developing the new Gantly Street area.
The Municipal District for the Roscrea, Thurles and Templemore area provided an update on a number of capital investment projects in Roscrea which have progressed in recent weeks.
The drive for investment in Roscrea has been specifically targeted at regenerating the town centre and capitalising on the assets of the town.
Under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund the development of Gantly Road in Roscrea was grant funded to transform the area into an urban street, delivering transformational change in the area.
The Project will catalyse the regeneration of this part of Roscrea town centre and in particular the delivery of the Gantly Street Age Friendly Neighbourhood.
This phase of the project will support the wider regeneration of the Gantly Road area by providing services and infrastructure, as well as land activation measures.

The Gantly Road project will deliver public infrastructure, civic spaces and public realm enhancement and will consolidate the linkages to the town centre and unlock the potential for the overall area.
A design team for the project has been appointed and are advancing with the detailed design phase of the project.
Consultation with neighbouring landowners will occur as the detailed design progresses.
The current programme allows for a 12 month construction phase commencing in Q1 2026.
In tandem with the Gantly Road Public Realm project, planning permission in relation to the Gantly Road Housing development project was granted on the 9th June 2025.
The architects – JFOC Architects - are currently preparing detailed drawings in order to procure a contractor for the construction of the development, scheduled to commence in 2026.
Both design teams have been liaising closely on the final details of the links between both projects on Gantly Road.
Separately, LUC (Land Use Consultants) have been appointed as the Architect-Led Design Team for the re-design of Castle Street.
A key component of Roscrea’s Town Centre First Masterplan was the re-development of Castle Street, Roscrea.
An important aim of the project is to enhance the arrival experience to the Castle through a process of decluttering to free the street of any elements which have a negative impact on the presentation of the Castle.

The project is being funded under the EU Just Transition Fund Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme (2023–2026) administered by Fáilte Ireland.
Thurles Municipal District is looking forward to working with local stakeholders, businesses, and residents to map out the future development of Castle Street and as part of the design process stakeholder consultation meetings will take place over the coming months.
