The Banagher Pillar.
If you are interested in Offaly's heritage then the new exhibition Words On The Wave at the National Museum of Ireland Kildare Street is definitely worth a visit.
The exhibition is running until October the 24th next. It includes the Banagher Pillar / Cross Shaft back out on display. Students from Gallen Community School in Ferbane played a calligraphic and illustrative role in the exhibition.
The Banagher Pillar was carved over a thousand years ago, possibly in the eighth century, and was rediscovered in the early ecclesiastical site in Banagher around 1850.
This remarkable artifact, with its detailed carvings and rich symbolism, tells the story of connections between art, belief, and society during Ireland's Golden Age.
Careful conservation work has recently been carried out on the Pillar and it's been placed in a new mount.
