AN art exhibition celebrating the 12 pubs of Birr was launched in Birr Library on Wednesday evening July 3.
“I'll meet you there” is a debut solo exhibition by Andrea Moore and it celebrates the significant role that the public house has played in the community of Birr.
There was a good turnout for the launch and this beautiful exhibition will be on display until July 27th.
Andrea is obviously a very skilled artist and she has created 12 excellent digital drawings of the facades of the pubs.
Andrea told the gathering that there used to be a lot more pubs in the town, somewhere between 30 and 40 depending on who you're talking to, and it's sad to see their number greatly diminished.
However, she added, they remain a very important part of the town's fabric, and in a unique way express the town's community spirit.
She pointed out that pubs are public spaces where you can relax in a way that no other public space allows. For some people they are like a second home. For this reason, because they create this unique public space, they remain a cherished and important part of our lives.
“Originally from Rathdowney, I have made the busy town of Birr my home over the past six years,” she said, “and it dawned on me that it's sad the number of pubs is much fewer than it was and I should celebrate the ones which remain, through the medium of art. As well as encapsulating the essence of community spirit in the town, I wanted to focus on the buildings themselves and the beautiful architecture of their facades; I wanted to highlight how these spaces have been integral to the community's social fabric, serving as venues for bonding and creating lasting memories.
“Through my art works, I am inviting viewers to appreciate the rich community life that thrives in Birr centred around its beloved pubs. The exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to the town's communal spirit and the enduring importance of these local spaces.”
Andrea's artworks in the Birr Library exhibition are for sale.
