New link road for Offaly town at detailed design stage

New link road for Offaly town at detailed design stage

Contract documents are expected to be prepared this month for a new road linking the Tanyard with High Street

Senior Executive Engineer with Offaly County Council John Connelly said he expects the council will be going on to prepare contract documents for the Tanyard/High Street Link this month. Mr Connelly said it is currently at the detailed design stage. He was reporting to the monthly meeting of Tullamore Municipal District.

The new road is expected to ease traffic congestion The proposal includes a new 70 metre section of link road, improved junctions, footpaths and raised pedestrian crossings serving Roselawn and the Tanyard.

It will facilitate the creation of a one-way traffic system through O’Connor Square with traffic entering O’Connor Square from the Tanyard and exiting onto High Street/Bridge Street.

The residents in Roselawn had strongly objected to the proposal in the early stages and a lot of consultation has taken place between the council and the people living there.

It is understood a wall is to be erected towards the estate's entrance, where there will be a new entrance way to the estate. A pedestrian crossing is also to be installed.

Councillor Sean O’Brien, welcomed the progress on the link but urged the executive to ‘’keep in mind’’ the residents. ‘’We had a lot of discussions with residents of Roselawn during the development and they gave very good feedback. I hope you keep good contact with them. There are a lot of elderly people on that estate’’ he said.
