TWELVE representatives from The Carers Association in Tullamore met Ireland’s first citizen last week to celebrate 25 years of the organisation.

His Excellency Michael D Higgens and his wife Sabina welcomed over 120 Family Carers to a special reception at Aras an Uachtarain on Wednesday last.

Sheilah Kinsella, Centre Manager with the Carers Association in Tullamore told the Offaly Express how the group presented President Higgens with a specially commissioned candle from local business Duffy and Scott to mark the occasion.

Over these 25 years The Carers Association has been providing vital supports and services to family carers across the country as well as lobbying for their rights and entitlements. 2012 will see the long awaited publishing of a National Carers Strategy which is something that the Association and family carers have lobbied Government on for many years.

President Higgins also welcomed the commencement of National Carers Week in his speech, highlighting the importance of recognising the work Family Carers provide with love each day.

Carers Week takes place from Monday June 18 to Sunday June 24 with a host of events taking place across the country. The Carers Association urges all Family Carers to get involved during Carers Week. For further details on events near you please call The Carers Association Careline 1800 24 07 24 or visit www.carersweek.ie.
