Champion boxer Akvile with teacher Stephen Dwyer
A STUDENT at the Sacred Heart School in Tullamore has achieved an extraordinary sporting
milestone on the international stage.
Akvile Siupieniute, aged just 14, has been crowned the Lithuanian national boxing champion in the 54kg weight category after a flawless series of victories.
Akvile, who lives and trains in Ireland, competed in three high-stakes bouts, quarter-final, semi-final and final as part of the national championship.
Fighting in the peek-a-boo pressure style, made famous by boxing legends such as Mike Tyson, she delivered three exceptional performances beginning with a 5-0 quarter-final victory.
Akvile then won the semi-final by technical knockout in round two and went on to take gold in the final with a 5-0 triumph in a fight which went the distance.
Now, all eyes turn to December, where Akvile will take part in the European Boxing Championships in Germany, representing both Ireland and Lithuania on the continental stage.
Speaking about her achievement, staff at the Sacred Heart School expressed immense pride in Akvile’s dedication, determination, and drive.
