Action on schools demanded

THERE never was a better time to build schools according to Sinn Féin Candidate Cllr Brian Stanley who is demanding action on the School Building programme in Laois/Offaly.

“There are 38 schools in the constituency waiting for either new buildings or refurbishment work. Many schools are dependent on substandard prefabs for classrooms and are seriously overcrowded,” added Cllr Stanley.

“Sinn Féin is proposing, as part of our job stimulus package, that the school building programme be fast tracked. This would have the benefit of providing proper accommodation for pupils and teachers; it would also reduce the massive bills for the purchase and rental of prefabs. In many cases, the amount of money wasted on prefabs over a prolonged number of years would have paid for proper classrooms.

“Fast tracking the new buildings and refurbishments would benefit the local economies and would get some of the thousands of unemployed construction workers back into gainful employment. There was never a better time to build schools as construction costs are very competitive and maximum value for taxpayer’s money can be achieved. False hope is often given to those communities needing new schools in the run into elections, only to be dashed once the election is over.

“If elected as a TD it is my intention to keep the pressure on the new Minister for Education and their Department to deliver on this issue”.
