Man charged with Portarlington murder

A Lithuanian national appeared at Tullamore District Court on Monday, February 17 charged with the murder of a Latvian man in Portarlington at the weekend.

A Lithuanian national appeared at Tullamore District Court on Monday, February 17 charged with the murder of a Latvian man in Portarlington at the weekend.

The 36-year-old, with an address at Spa Street in Portarlington, was charged with the murder of 26-year-old Alexander Karpov on Saturday.

Detective Garda Barry McPaul told the court that he arrested and cautioned Mr Zigelis at Portlaoise Garda Station.

Det Gda McPaul said the defendant answered when cautioned, “I already gave my explanation to the guards in interview, I killed that man.”

Mr Zigelis was subsequently charged with the murder of Mr Karpov.

Judge Catherine Staines granted legal aid and approved a request for an interpreter.

She remanded Mr Zigelis in custody to reappear before Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
