IT was a case of deja vu for Cllr Barry Cowen last Monday as SOS protestors in Daingean gave him a ‘warm’ reception.
He was followed and verbally challenged on the main street by protestors brandishing banners, similar to what had happened in Banagher by SOS members last week.
“The aim of the SOS DBK Group was never political and only ever wanted to see the fire service restored to a safe level of eight stations instead of the current and dangerous and totally inadequate service with five stations. Fianna Fail and Fine Gael chose to drag it into the political arena,” said an SOS representative.
Meanwhile Cllr Cowen said he respected people’s democratic right to protest and the manner in which that protest was carried out was up to the individual. “Apart from the half hour of the protest, the team canvassing the greater Daingean area met with a resonably good response.”
Cllr Cowen said the people of Daingean had shown the courtesy of respect and added, “The episode of courting publicity on the part of the protesters to benefit their own ego, doesn’t benefit the greater good.”
