€210,000 has been allocated for the provision of the first official cycle lanes for Tullamore.
The cycle lane will run from the roundabout at Scally’s supermarket along Collins Lane, the old Burlington Road, Rahan Road, past the Fire Station and to the Schools at Kilcruttin. The cycle lanes will be on both sides of the road.
The allocation from the Department of Transport has been welcomed by Tullamore Independent Cllr Sean O’Brien.
“This is great news for cyclists as it is hopefully the beginning of a wider development of cycle lanes throughout the town. It is also good news for school going children who wish to cycle safely to Scoil Bhride or Scoil Mhuire at Kilcruttin. In total 4KM of cycle lanes will be provided and this allocation of money follows on from a recommendation in our own Tullamore Transportation Study,” continued Cllr O’ Brien.
“I have been informed by the staff in the Roads Section of Offaly County Council that work on this project will commence immediately as this money has to be spent in the current year. I am hopeful that the cycle lanes will be in place for the first term of the new school year,” concluded Cllr O’ Brien.
