Ian Bailey dies of suspected heart attack at 66 years of age in Bantry

Ian Bailey, the main suspect in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, has died suddenly.

It's understood that Mr Bailey collapsed in Bantry, county Cork where he lived on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to assist the 66-year-old, but he was unresponsive.

Mr Bailey was convicted in absentia by a French court in 2019 for the murder of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

The 39-year-old film producer was found murdered outside her west Cork home in December 1996, and the case remains unsolved.

Mr Bailey, originally from Britain, was arrested and questioned in relation to the murder but was never charged, and was never extradited to France despite a campaign by Ms du Plantier's family.

His death has been confirmed by his solicitor Frank Buttimer.
