A fund raising Golf Classic in aid of ENT Zambia and Gorta will be held at Esker Hills Golf Club, Tullamore, Co Offaly on Friday, August 2.

The organisers are encouraging any golfers in the locality to get a team together for the event and are also open to sponsorship from local businesses.

The Golf Classic will support the work that Tullamore-based Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant Kieran O’Driscoll has been doing with ENT Zambia since 2004. Dr O’Driscoll has spent most of his annual leave working in Zambia where he provides much needed ear, nose and throat medical services for patients who might die if they do not receive treatment.

With the assistance of GORTA, Rotary International, friends, family and colleagues, ENT Zambia now provides vital services in a number of locations in Zamba and also has a mobile clinic which enables Kieran and his volunteers to carry out life-saving surgeries for more and more people, especially in rural communities.

According to Dr Kieran O’Driscoll, “Education is perhaps the most important part of the work of ENT Zambia and the aim of the organization is to try and get people to help themselves. Setting up a training scheme is a long term goal. The most important three elements are the education of nurses and doctors in ENT, the supply of equipment and then the manpower to get it started.”

The aid agency Gorta has been a long time supporter of ENT Zambia, through local woman Deirdre Fox, who has been involved with Gorta for many years.

Both organisations have worked closely together in the last couple of years and funding is vital for the success of such an operation. It is hoped that at least €10,000 will be raised, which will go towards continuing the work of a specialist Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic in Zambia.

For team entry enquiries please contact Ray on 087 9856208 and for business sponsorship opportunities please contact Deirdre on 086 2419680.
