Tullamore native and current Irish Ombudsman Emily O’ Reilly has been appointed European Ombudsman.
Ms O’Reilly was elected following a run off with Dutch MEP Ria Oomen-Ruijten by 359 votes to 276. A total of six candidates were in the running for the position.
She will take up the job later this year after serving as Ombudsman in Ireland since 2003.
Prior to her initial appointment as Ombudsman and Information Commissioner, Ms O’Reilly was a noted political correspondent in both print and broadcast media.
