Offaly Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen has said he is greatly disappointed that a large number of applications from across the county have been turned down under the Sports Capital Grants scheme.
Deputy Cowen said, “While I welcome the fact that a number of clubs and groups have been successful in this round of capital funding I know there will be many more disappointed not to have been included.
“It is my intention now to contact the Department and seek feedback as to the methodology used to determine the successful applications. There has been an extraordinary benefit to local communities from this type of funding through the years. In that context I will be impressing upon Minister Ring the social and economic benefit there would be of a much larger envelope towards the sports and cultural sector.
“I know from working with groups locally that this type of direct funding is extremely important and helps improve sports clubs and other facilities which are of huge benefit to teenagers and clubs in the county.
Deputy Cowen concluded, “I will continue to make representations on behalf of groups, voluntary organisations and community projects who were turned down for funding in this announcement and seeking clarity on the criteria that has been used to arrive at the ‘approved’ list.”
