Hosts of Offaly events to commemorate county's connection with WWI

A number of groups and societies along with Offaly Library Service have arranged events to mark the centenary of end of WWI over the coming months. See below for details.

Wednesday: 7 November
Title: “Please God, he will come home safely”
Details: Dr Ciaran Reilly on behalf of the Edenderry Historical Society will focus on the end of the first World War as seen by the people of Edenderry

Exhibition of World War One memorabilia in Edenderry library during the month of November

Sunday: 11 November
Title: Shinrone Ecumenical Remembrance Service
Details: The people of Shinrone will remember their people who fought and died during World War One. Refreshments served in community centre after this service alongside a display of WW1 items

Title: Exhibition of Military Paraphernalia organised by Andy Gonoude
Details: A number of exhibitors will display their collections of military paraphernalia including guns, medals, letters and much more

Title: Launch of Offaly and the Great War, book of essays edited by Michael Byrne
Details: Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society are celebrating the launch by inviting a number of the contributors to read their essays on the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Anna Marie Delaney, Chief Executive of Offaly County Council will officially launch the book.

Details: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Ending of World War 1

Monday 19 November
Title: The Life of the 5th Earl of Rosse.
Details: Edward 5th Earl of Rosse died on 10 June 1918, as a result of head wounds received in battle. His grandson Brendan 7th Earl of Rosse will make a short opening address. The paper will be delivered by archivist, Lisa Shortall.

Saturday 24 November
Title: Martin Moffat VC and the Liberation of Ledegem – 14 October 1918: a talk by Denis Kirby, Vice Chairman of the Leinster Regiment Association.
Details: After four years of German occupation the 2nd Battalion of the Prince of Wales’ Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) liberated the town of Ledegem in Belgium, during which action Martin Moffat was awarded the VC.
