Tullamore sporting and business sectors back proposal for large housing scheme

A decision is due this week on a proposal to build 173 dwellings at Arden in Tullamore.

The application has received strong support from business and sporting sectors in the town. 

The plan is for a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom houses on a site which is bounded by Ballin Ri residential estate to the west, Tullamore Sportslink’’ to the south and Collins Lane to the north.

The proposed development by Rocktop Asset Management, will be accessed from a new entrance on the Arden Road and via an internal link road to the Ballin Ri Estate to a pre-existing roundabout on the West. 

88 houses will be situated on the western side while 85 will be located on the eastern side. The application received 14 submissions.

Tullamore Sportslink said the development is ‘’designed with dignified respect to the adjoining properties’’ and are of the opinion that the development will enhance the vibrancy of the overall area. Sportslink  added that it is aware that upon granting of planning permission that development levies are requested with certain proportions to be allocated to the upgrading of facilities to accommodate improvements to public infrastructure and to increase activities. ’’Tullamore sportslink would welcome some of the allocation as we already provide some of these activities but could do with more effective and additional facilities,’’ it added. 

Ben Scally who runs a supermarket on Arden Road said he has looked at the drawings and is ‘’delighted to see such a nice scheme that will be very suitable for this part of Tullamore for families and younger people looking for a start in life.’’

Sherry Fitzgerald auctioneers said ‘’it has all the hallmarks of a well designed residential development.’’

Councillor Tony McCormack called it an ‘’exemplary development’’.

However, not everyone is in favour of the proposal. One submission said it will have a negative effect on the quality of living as the development is overlooking their house.  Another is concerned about traffic management in the area. 

Offaly County Council is due to make its decision by February 10.
