Offaly man sent to prison for stealing power washer
A 27-year-old Tullamore man has been given a six-month sentence for stealing a power washer from a Portarlington store.
At last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court, Sean Coss of Pallas Lake, Bluebell, Tullamore, was charged with theft from Laois Hire, Botley Lane, Portarlington.
Sgt JJ Kirby gave evidence that on October 17, 2017, the accused rented a power washer from Laois Hire, valued at €895. He never returned the item, nor was it ever recovered.
The accused had 179 previous convictions, 17 for theft.
He was already serving a ten-month sentence on other matters when he appeared at last week’s court.
Defence for the accused said that Coss had come from a very dysfunctional family and had been in care since he was 14.
As there was a significant loss to Laois Hire, Judge Staines said she had to impose a prison sentence.
The accused was sentenced to six months in prison, with recognisance fixed in the event of an appeal.
