An incredible collection of historic and modern items from a prestigious Offaly home are going up for auction.
Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers have been entrusted by the owners to conduct the contents sale of 11 Oxmantown Mall, Birr.
This elegant period residence, in the centre of the historic town of Birr contains a valuable and diverse collection amassed by the owners , which is now being disposed of, following the sale of the property.
The collection of items from the house comprises 550 lots and some of the highlights of the auction are:
- Lot 343 - A large early 19th Century Italian School romantic coastal landscape Painting, oil on canvas, signed and dated in monogram X.E.R, 1839. - Lot 169 - Frederick Buck, Irish School, c.1771-1840, Miniature, “A half- length Portrait of a Gentleman”, approx. 7cms. (€3,000 - €4,000)
- Lot 304 - Draper (Professor Henry) M.D., A very large and extremely rare early original Photograph of the Moon, approx. 53cms x 42cms (21" x 16 1/2") bearing a printed label "Photograph of the Moon, taken by Prof. Henry Draper, M.D., with a silvered glass Telescope, Fifteen and a Half Inches Aperture [With address] Hastings N.Y., September 3rd 1863". The mount also bears a m/ss dedication "The Earl of Rosse, with Dr. Draper's Respects, University of New York”. (€7,000 - €11,000)
- Lot 365 - A good quality and attractive 19th Century carved mahogany framed Four Poster Bed, with red covered drapes and tassels; together with custom made patchwork Throw and Pillow Covers. (€1,500 - €2,000)
Lot 536 - A good quality Warwick type two handled Urn, on stand, 126cms high (€600 - €800)
Lot 469 - An Irish Georgian period mahogany breakfront Library Bookcase, by repute this Bookcase was made by Thomas Graham, Cabinetmaker, Clonmel. (€7,000 - €10,000)
Lot 332 - A George II English breakfront marble top Console Table, in the manner of William Kent. (€4,000 - €6,000)
As well as the more expensive items, there are also a large number of items priced around the €100-€200 mark including tea sets, clocks, numerous silver items, furniture and some artworks.
