Offaly commercial unit to be sold for €1 for a brilliant reason

Offaly County Council is to dispose of a commercial unit it owns for a nominal fee of €1 to facilitate an exciting venture in the county.

The disposal of unit 25J of the Axis Business Park in Tullamore came before councillors at the February meeting of Offaly County Council on Monday, February 18.

The move sees the council-connected company Offaly Innovation & Design Centre CLG taking the unit of a 20-year lease with a fee of €1 changing hands as a formality.

The company currently operates The Junction Innovation Centre at unit 19H of Axis Business Park.

The new lease will allow the company to manage and operate both units with refurbishments to take place at the new unit in the coming months.

The revamped premises will allow businesses to expand from The Junction and the unit could also accommodate new start-up companies and facilitate remote working in the town.

Proposing the disposal, Cllr Tommy McKeigue described it as "one of the better ideas to come before this chamber in recent years," adding, "Axis was a great buy at the time."

The disposal received widespread support and was officially seconded by Cllr Tony McCormack.
