Sadness as popular Tullamore business closes its doors

Tributes have been paid to the staff at the popular Cash N' Carry Direct store in Tullamore after it closed in recent days.

Ken Smollen, who operates the Ken Smollen Food Appeal, acknowledged the staff at the store for the support they gave to his campaign to end poverty in the Midlands.

"I was shocked and saddened to learn that Cash N’Carry Direct in Cloncollig, Tullamore was closed down yesterday with the loss of a number of jobs," Ken said.

"I will be forever grateful to the former manager there Ray Byrne and all of the past and present staff for their help since the Ken Smollen Food Appeal began in December 2016."

"Cash N’Carry Direct was the very first business to come on board, very generously offering to help by placing a Food Appeal trolley in the store. I’d like to wish Ray and all of the brilliant team of people there the very best for the future."

Other customers were also sad to see the Cash N' Carry close its doors. Patrica Quigley said: "That's so sad, what beautiful people there, I'm so sorry for them."

Mary Walsh added: "That’s so sad. I always bought my bits and bobs there and left food in the trolley for Ken."
