Planning application for new Offaly shopping centre expected 'within weeks'

The Offaly Express understands that a planning application is expected to be lodged with Offaly County Council 'within weeks' for a commercial and residential mixed-use development on Church Road.

The old Coen's site in the town was recently purchased and it is now suggested a planning application could be tabled for the development before the end of the month.

The development would incorporate a shopping centre as well as a number of residential units at the site which will be adjacent to the new Lidl supermarket.

It is understood the relocation of Fitzpatrick's garage from the area on Church Road out to the old Conlon's Garage on the Portarlington road has freed up the development.

It's understood the buyers of the site are local and will now push ahead with development plans.

Coen's is the second high-profile Tullamore site sold in recent weeks with Texas reportedly changing hands last month to another local buyer.

It is not expected movement will be as swift on that central site.
