A prisoner who escaped custody having been admitted to Mayo General Hospital from Castlerea Prison on Saturday has been re-arrested in Offaly.

Gardaí had been searching for the prisoner for the last 72 hours, and made there discovery following a burglary call in Offaly on Monday evening, September 10.

Gardaí at Tullamore responded to a call that a burglary was in progress at Clara Catholic Church at approximately 10.30pm on Monday.

When they arrived at the scene they observed a side window of the church broken. Following a search of the area, a man (33) and woman (29) were arrested.

Both were brought to Tullamore Garda Station and detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984.

"It has now been established that the male suspect involved in this investigation is the same person who fled from custody having been admitted to Mayo General Hospital on September 8," a Garda spokesperson confirmed to the Offaly Express.
