Overcrowding continues at Tullamore Hospital today

The persistent overcrowding that the Midlands Regional Hospital continues today as the facility continues to try and accommodate a large number of patients awaiting admission.

As a result, the HSE's Escalation Policy has once again been activated today. It is the fifth time in two weeks that the policy has been put in place at the hospital.

A statement from the hospital today states, "The Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore is experiencing high levels of attendances with many patients requiring admission today (Tuesday 29th May). As a result, the HSE’s Escalation Policy has been activated at the hospital. In order to assist us we are requesting that patients in the first instance, consider using their GP out of hours for medical assessment, where possible. The Hospital regrets that any patient should experience delays in accessing In patient beds."

According to the INMO, 24 patients are awaiting a bed at the A&E department in Tullamore with 12 of those on trolleys. Across the border in Portlaoise, 10 patients are awaiting a bed while a further 10 are in a similar situation at Mullingar Hospital.
